To the parents like us...
looking for something more,
I started Kalexedy because my own children needed a space like this to exist. Like many families who find their way to our 'pod,' we were looking for the "sweet spot" between public, private, and homeschooling—a place where you don't have to choose between a career and a great education for your child.
In this space, "success" is found in the moments that don't show up on a standardized test:

Transformation: Like the student who joined us with record-level anxiety and now tries to recruit every person they meet to join the pod.

Connection: Like the "Students Only" enrichments that leave parents wishing they could go back to school themselves.

Resilience: Like the student-vs-teacher "prank war" that’s been escalating for weeks.
My favorite part of this work is leading the "big and messy" projects. Last year, we hatched and raised chickens (and some surprise ducks). The kids did it all, from building brooders to managing a budget. It came full circle when they made omelets with eggs from "their" birds. We don’t just "teach" biology; we live it.
Most recently, the kids missed each other so much over February break that we had to open the pod early just so they could build a giant plush movie-theater out of bean bags and soft mats. Watching them sing, make art, and "whine" through the cleanup together left me with the biggest smile.
We aren't trying to be a traditional school, and we aren't just a homeschool group. We are a community of families who believe that education should adapt to the child—not the other way around.
