Q&A with Microschool Students

Question: Do you feel like you learn more with your homeschool curriculum/personalized learning plan than when you were in a traditional school? Why or why not?

Answers:

K (17-years-old, microschool alumnus): Having the freedom and flexibility to study topics I liked at my level felt like the way it should have always been done. I'm not going to learn everything at the exact same pace and depth as my classmates do. Having a curriculum that was personalized to me allowed me to accomplish more than my peers and enjoy learning!

C (9-years-old, current student):

Yes, I feel like I learn more because I can actually choose the subjects I do. For example I do Latin.

K (12-years-old, current student):

I definitely learn more with an individualized education. I feel much more motivated knowing I have the ability to manage my schedule. In public schools, the large class sizes can be quite overwhelming. It felt quite chaotic and frustrating when I was told to wait for my peers to catch up before proceeding. My homeschooling experience has felt very empowering in the many ways I have control over my education. I will forever be grateful for the experiences and opportunities this style of education has provided me with.

A (11-years-old, current student):

With a personalized learning plan, I learn so much more than I did in traditional public school. When I was in online public school, on Fridays you would be assigned your work for the day and you would do it all independently. Every week I would look forward to it. Now, I can look forward to this every day. It is so much more fun and valuable for me to learn about things that interest me. My learning plan has allowed me to learn about rhetoric, logic, and Latin, to name a few. I would not have been able to learn about subjects like this in a traditional school. This experience is so valuable for me, and it makes my learning experience fun and interesting.

L (13-years-old, current student):

I am definitely learning more now that I am using a homeschool curriculum than I did in public school. I have the ability to choose my education based on my interests, as well as communicate my needs and wants with my teachers. I don't feel pressured to conform to a rigid plan that wasn't built for me or to stay at the same pace as my classmates.
